It is not uncommon to experience nausea from the third trimester of pregnancy. What are they due to? Are they a sign of an upcoming delivery? We take stock with a midwife.
After the first trimester nausea, you thought you were done with those little pregnancy niggles… and now they’re back! However, they do not express themselves in the same way and the reasons are also different. Explanations.
Why does nausea occur at the end of pregnancy?
First ask about the timing, this nausea occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy, after 26-28 weeks of amenorrhea.
According to Nicolas Dutriaux, midwife, several explanations can justify the occurrence of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women at the end of pregnancy:
- Possible food poisoning. It is therefore necessary to control its temperature. If you have a fever, go to the emergency room of the maternity ward to eliminate possible listeriosis, which requires prompt antibiotic treatment.
- A sign of worsening underlying high blood pressure. Is there a headache? Phosphenes (fly before the eyes)? Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)? Accompanying abdominal pain? Again, it is better to consult a doctor or midwife to dispel the hypothesis of a pregnancy complication called HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets), that is, an increase in hepatic enzymes and a decrease in platelets;
- Finally, when the pregnancy is carried to term (after 37 weeks of amenorrhea) nausea can simply herald the onset of labor and the arrival of the baby.

Symptoms of nausea at the end of pregnancy
In general, nausea manifests itself differently at the beginning and at the end of pregnancy. While in the first trimester the nausea is more morning, with sensitivity to odors, toothpaste …; in the third trimester of pregnancy, pregnant women are more likely to experience a more classic state of nausea, such as B. poor digestion. “A feeling of being “squishy”, unable to describe the exact feeling, except that something big is brewing‘ said the midwife.
Focus on signs of childbirth nausea
In fact, nausea and vomiting at the end of pregnancy can be signs of a more or less imminent birth, heralding the departure to the maternity ward. Explanations: Nausea to the point of vomiting is caused by contractions of the uterus which the pregnant woman does not yet find painful but which increase in duration and/or intensity.
“Vomiting may occur during dilation, particularly at the beginning of labor, when labor begins. A baby who is still too high or not bowing his head enough will ask the mother’s body for extra help to position himself properly. Vomiting causes the abdominal muscles to contract, which increases the force exerted on the fetus by the contraction to help it progress ‘ explains Nicolas Dutriaux.
Another reason: the stomach strain associated with labor. “Periodically, as the uterus hardens, digestion slows or even stops. Therefore, even in the hours before the birth, some form of indigestion can occur due to a somewhat large meal.“.
How to fix this nausea at the end of pregnancy? It seems that there is no cure for expectant mothers. According to the midwife, it should be noted that “If vomiting is imminent, it will happen because it is necessary for the baby’s development“.
Finally, be aware that nausea and vomiting during the third trimester of pregnancy are neither cause nor consequence with other signs of labor onset, such as amniotic sac rupture or mucus plug loss.
