Popular education is often where you least expect it, where you don’t see it. It acts daily as close as possible to the inhabitants, young people and citizens. What is special about the folk education associations? They enable the participation of individuals so that they can change the society in which they live.

Popular education, local activities for all

Behind a show, recreation center or summer camp, professional training course, sports meeting, knowledge-sharing network, music class, science club, there is often a popular educational association. Popular education is said to be a “territory factory” because it brings the territories to life on a daily basis, bringing together its inhabitants in collective, cultural, sporting and leisure practices. In that regard, it’s an incredible resource, a partner in many public policies.

Popular education, an innovative and inclusive response

Society must respond to major democratic, social, ecological and digital challenges. But these issues are complicated! Public education, for example, makes it possible to take up the question of ecological change and the influence on public decisions as well as the appropriation of digital uses and content.

Popular education works by mobilizing citizens to analyze and understand the world around them and to invent answers together. It allows them to experiment with them in different settings, be it local, national or international. By acting alongside public authorities, she carries that voice and calls for the building of effective public policies.

As a true “laboratory of democracy”, it enables people to emancipate themselves, allowing them to rise above their assigned social status. Every human being, whether poor, young, female, etc. has the ability to take responsibility and form their own opinion in order to change society.

Face the emergency with popular education

When the suburbs burn, when citizens, bystanders, a teacher are cowardly murdered, who do we call? popular education. And when there is an urgent need to take in children, young people, families forced to emigrate by war or misery; when there is a need to support populations that are victims of climate-related disasters; when it comes to providing refugees or those left behind with access to education here and on the other side of the world. Youth and popular education associations exist to preserve and share common values, respond to immediate needs, and create the conditions for dialogue and civil harmony.

Popular education, a space of citizenship

In the emergency situations that we know and that we will know more and more, popular education will be there to involve citizens in the solutions. She fights and will fight the withdrawal to herself, the fear and the hatred of others. Popular education promotes and builds an egalitarian, just, supportive, ecological and inclusive society in which everyone can live with dignity, build their place, play a role and find their social benefits.

Whatever it brings, popular education needs long-term funding and trusting relationships with public authorities.
