[Le regard du psy] To choose, that not too distant act of family life – A Vannes, le respect du psy

How does the fatherland have similarities with the family?

In the etymological sense, the fatherland is the country of the father. The model of our contemporary democracies, based on national representation, remains modeled on that of the family. Its traditional structure is based on the heterosexual couple with child(ren), although we see a contemporary redefinition of the family, whether single parent and/or homosexual. From then on the social structure remains patriarchal, so we are the children of the fatherland, the daughters and sons of the nation, as expressed on the inscriptions on our war memorials: “To our children who died for France / Country. »

It is therefore no coincidence that, like in our families, within our society we experience the difficulties common to all familials: propensity to quarrel, need for love, pride towards idealized parents, which gives us access to self-esteem and to Projection into a sure “coming”. This transposition gives us access to our identity and could represent a possible definition of political consciousness.

Where does the distrust that is so expressed in today’s society come from?

Therefore, if we accept this hypothesis, the political field is part of the desire, of the questioning of our elected representatives – father figures. In our eyes they should know and give answers. The field of politics is also part of the field of entitlement, when the answers given do not satisfy our interests, but also in that of rebellion, when no answer, accompanied by condescension, ignores the legitimacy of our expectations.

Indeed, the choice of one of our own, the appointment of “fathers,” inscribes us into an extended family that shares desires, aspirations, and rights to happiness that are based only on trust. Absent or abused, it is suspicion.

Frustrated in our desires, victims of policies opposed to our individual aspirations, witnesses of injustice, we revolt, like the Yellow Vests crisis or the aggression of our elected officials being used as scapegoats. But we can sometimes reconcile the risk of getting caught up in depression, especially since the last two Covid years: what’s the point!

So what can motivate citizens to vote?

In the face of this fatigue, a “last burst” is possible: to react, to make our legitimacy heard, to express our worldviews, our desires in the context of the elections. Our closest elected officials, the mayors, are there, reminding us that solutions are always possible because they are by our side, solving our problems, giving substance to our shared ideals, and instilling in us the satisfaction of commitment.

Today, witnesses to the exodus, to discrimination, concern for our security, hope for a better life, legitimize voting, whether null, white, or committed. Even if the desperation of many pushes them to abstain, engagement remains one of the means to affirm our humanity to reject tyranny, hatred and indifference.
