The final phase of the process that began ten months ago was launched this Monday in Abidjan: the States General for National Education and Literacy have been taking place in Côte d’Ivoire since July 19, 2021. On the occasion of the start of the validation work, Prime Minister Patrick Achi stated that “the first and essential objective is to build together a sustainable social pact in favor of an Ivorian school focused on the success of the students in the acquisition of the values of the Republic”.
In his speech, the Ivorian head of government did not fail to pay tribute to the work of the Minister of National Education and Literacy, Professor Mariatou Koné, for “the attentive, constructive and inclusive management of this strategic process”.
To fulfill this mission, three levels of reflection characterized this work. These are the regional consultations in the districts involving the population, the work of the technical commissions which have mobilized experts on seven major themes, and the political orientation within the framework of the steering committee.
The technical and financial partners of the Ivorian school were involved in the discussions, the content of which was brought together in a document containing the analysis of the causes of the situation and proposals for action. This synthesis of the work will be studied for three days before validating the final document for President Alassane Ouattara.
Professor Mariatou Koné recalled that the Steering Committee initially carried out information and awareness campaigns throughout the national territory from August 30 to September 10, 2021.
Subsequently, she added, he organized regional consultations from October 27 to November 5, 2021 to gather contributions from grassroots people, but also exchanges in the districts from November 29 to December 15, 2021 to gather those gathered in the regions to consolidate posts.
Finally, declared the Minister of National Education and Literacy, a digital platform was launched on October 26, 2021 to collect contributions. The seven themes reviewed by education stakeholders are: education policy; Inclusion, Justice and Gender; quality of teaching and learning; internal and external relevance and efficiency, management of flows and gateway classes, planning for emergencies and crises; learning society; Governance and management, social dialogue and funding mechanism, and digitization of the education system.
“These national school meetings are aligned in their objectives to the people-centred vision of the social program of a united Côte d’Ivoire, the program of the President of the Republic,” explained Professor Mariatou Koné.
For her part, Anne Lemaitre, the resident representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Côte d’Ivoire, indicated that her expectations were “reforms to promote science, vocational training, technical training, school courses” , keeping girls in school and teacher training”. In the past, Côte d’Ivoire held consultations on the school in 1977, 1985, 1993 and 1994.
