Indeed, with 5 million practitioners in France, chess is one of those historical disciplines that has regained popularity in recent years. The explosion of online practice during lockdown in 2020, coupled with the broadcast of Le Jeu de la Dame on Netflix, had an immediate impact on the number of licensees.

The introduction of chess in schools finds a particular echo among the pedagogical tools that, on the occasion of the Mathematics Week, which from 7 April has become a pedagogical tool for young people.

By mobilizing logic, strategy, rigor and the ability to abstract while facilitating the learning of citizenship through respect for the rules and others, chess falls under the recommendations of the TOROSSIAN-VILLANI report and as part of the mathematics strategy.

Practiced from an early age, it helps build personality by nurturing attention, imagination, anticipation, judgment, and self-confidence. It also finds its full place in the context of school sport, as it represents a cultural element that has both an educational and a social and health-promoting function and carries the values of equal opportunities. . In addition, the renewed partnership particularly affects students in the priority education system and in the vocational stream who encounter difficulties in school, especially in mathematics.

With the goal of inducting 250,000 elementary school children over a 3-year period, the Class’Echecs program takes a new step. School teachers who volunteer for the program will have access to free training on the m@gistère platform, while 5,000 chessboards will be distributed to 500 schools from the first year of the partnership.

The free system is made possible by the financial and material support of the Crédit Mutuel Enseignant and the Échiquier de la Réussite. USEP will ensure practical continuity by organizing meetings between classes and schools. A research laboratory will examine the impact on teaching from the first year.

Obtaining the Public Service Delegation will also give the FFE concrete means to reinforce its actions on the two essential axes of each sports federation:

  • sporting performance with the federal performance project: a performance plan for the French teams of today and tomorrow;
  • social performance through the implementation of the national strategy of the FFE, which includes the fight against violence in sport, sports health, inclusion, disability, international influence …

The resources made available by the Ministry Sport and the National Sport Agency will be financial, human and material for top athletes.

The actions carried out according to this agreement must be monitored jointly by the MENJS and the representatives of the signatory associations.
