A man has been put on trial at the Assises in the Dordogne for raping and sexually assaulting seven children

It is an extraordinary trial that will open this Monday, March 28, before the Dordogne Assizes in Périgueux. It should last four days and no less than see 17 people joined as civil parties. The case begins in 2017 when a 17-year-old young man is taken into custody on suspicion of rape at a nightclub. He then told the police: “I will not take the risk of repeating what I experienced because it screwed up my life”. He claims his stepfather abused him when he was 10, forced him to have sex and threatened not to see his mother again if he spoke.

The defendant recognizes only two victims

The investigation by the gendarmerie brings to light other alleged victims, always following the same pattern, children of the family, his companions, one of his own children or cousins ​​whom he machine-washed at the age of seven attack them. According to prosecutors, the first facts date back to 1995when the defendant was 19 years old. They would have lasted for years.

The accused has been in custody since the end of 2017. Before the investigating judge, he only recognizes two victims. One of his sons for rapes he allegedly committed over a two year period. And sexually assaulting one of his stepdaughters. “He regrets. He is ashamed”explains one of the defense attorneys, Me Maryline Bernard. “He only acknowledges the facts when confronted with direct evidence”, replies Fabien Marsat, who is defending several civil parties in this case. When he was arrested five years ago, the 40-year-old was working as a cleaner in a school: “He worked there for several years, the employees were interrogated, nobody ever accused him of anything.”, emphasizes his lawyer. I Maryline Bernard mentions her client’s troubled past, placed at the age of four: “He himself was a victim of sexual abuse in his childhood. He had never spoken to anyone about it, he admitted it in the middle of the investigation.”

She describes a man who is subservient to his successive companions. On the civil side, on the other hand, we paint the portrait of a man who did it “a pretty extraordinary influence” on his victims “He managed to silence them non-violently and he always knew how to inspire trust”, Fabien Marsat assures me. The civil parties, numerous in this process, “are concerned, they fear the hearing, they would have preferred that he not deny the facts”, he explains. Two of the seven alleged victims are still minors today. The defendant faces twenty years in prison. The verdict is expected on Thursday, March 31.
